SPD Talks to Area Students About Careers
Southern Power District staff spent some time in March visiting with students
about the different types of careers held by its employees. On March 24th, a group of
students visited the Hastings Area Office and visited with Darrel Schmidt, Bill Rundle,
Kal Halbmaier and LeAnne Doose about jobs at SPD. Southern’s staff shared their
insights on what it takes to be a valuable employee, and offered advice
on the type of education and training needed for a variety of jobs at SPD.
The group of students also had the opportunity to watch a pole climbing
demonstration--a skill required of our linemen.
Then on March 31st, Darrel Schmidt and LeAnne Doose attended
Career Day in Holdrege and spoke to hundreds of area high school
sophomores about the types of careers offered at SPD.
Southern Power District currently employs 104 full time people
at its service centers in Holdrege, Franklin, Hastings, Grand Island and
Central City, as well as its headquarter offices in Grand Island. About
one half of these employees are linemen. The district also employs
purchasing and warehouse personnel,
customer service representatives,
engineering/operations staff, metering
technicians and readers, and a
variety of administrative positions.
