In March, the US Energy Information Administration released state electricity profiles, which outline average retail prices for electricity state by state. Being an all public power state, you might expect that Nebraska ranked high on the list of states with the lowest retail rates. And of course, we did great!

According to data from 2008, which was the basis for the report, Nebraska ranks 7th in the nation for the lowest average retail price for electric rates. Here’s how the top 10 states stack up, from lowest on up:
  • 1. West Virginia, 5.61 cents/kWh
  • 2. Wyoming, 5.67 cents/kWh
  • 3. Idaho, 5.69 cents/kWh
  • 4. Kentucky, 6.26 cents/kWh
  • 5. Utah, 6.46 cents/kWh
  • 6. Washington, 6.55 cents/kWh
  • 7. NEBRASKA, 6.58 cents/kWh
  • 8. North Dakota, 6.69 cents/kWh
  • 9. Missouri, 6.84 cents/kWh
  • 10. Iowa, 6.89 cents/kWh
Other surrounding states included Kansas, 7.45 cents/kWh (number 14); Oklahoma, 7.81 cents/kWh (number 18); and Colorado, 8.59 cents/kWh (number 26).

The states with the highest average retail price were:
  • 47. Rhode Island, 16.01 cents/kWh
  • 48. Massachusetts, 16.27 cents/kWh
  • 49. New York, 16.57 cents/kWh
  • 50. Connecticut, 17.79 cents/kWh
  • 51. Hawaii, 29.2 cents/kWh
