Switch & Save Campaign Is Underway!
Thursday, Nov. 1, Nebraska Public Power District and its wholesale customer utilities (including Southern Power District) kicked off a campaign to encourage energy efficiency achieved through the installation of compact fluorescent lamps. “The
‘Switch and Save’ campaign involves working with local retailers in the communities we serve and providing them with coupons that customers can use to purchase compact fluorescent lamps at a discounted price – compliments of NPPD and its wholesale customer utilities,” said Ken Curry, energy efficiency and solutions manager for NPPD.
Customers can select either a one-dollar off coupon for a single compact fluorescent lamp or a two-dollar off coupon for a package of two or more lamps. Customers can also choose the lamp style and brand they prefer, but the package must be identified as ENERGY STAR® qualified. The Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program encourages the installation of compact fluorescent lamps that use 75 percent less energy than equivalent incandescent light bulbs and have a rated life that is up to 10 times longer.
“Electrical usage in the service area of
NPPD and our wholesale customer utilities is growing, which is contributing to the increased use of existing power generation facilities and the expected need for additional power generation facilities in the future,” said Ron Asche, president and CEO. “The collective impact of even the smallest individual actions to reduce electric consumption can make a big difference overall.”
If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified lamp, there would be enough energy saved to light more than 3 million homes for a year, reduce annual energy costs by more than $600 million and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. NPPD and its wholesale customer utilities are contributing approximately $150,000 toward this campaign which will run through the end of December, or as long as supplies last. A list of retail businesses participating in the ‘Switch and Save’ campaign is available on NPPD’s website, www.nppd.com.
Southern customers can also view a complete list of participating retailers in their area on our own website. SPD Customers purchasing bulbs from the Grand Island or Hastings area can take advantage of the program by clipping the coupons which appeared in the November Newsletter, and redeeming at Ace Hardware in Grand Island or Big G Ace in Hastings.
